Air Duct Cleaning Guidelines

Air Duct Cleaning Guidelines

Home duct cleaning is important due to the increasing concern about what is in the air that you and your loved ones are breathing inside of your home.  You have concerns about indoor air pollution, about mold, and other allergies.  There is plenty of information out there about the dangers of these pollutants in your home and how they can be spread throughout your home through your air duct system of your heating and cooling system.  Here are some air duct cleaning guidelines that we recommend you to follow.

While the EPA says that home air duct cleaning is not always necessary, there are circumstances where cleaning them is recommended.

  • When there is visible mold in the air ducts or on the registers. Because you cannot see inside the entire system, you should consider hiring a professional to inspect and determine if it is mold.
  • When you can see excessive dust in the air ducts or can see when you turn on the system. Normal dust usually clings to the sides of the vents and usually cannot be seen blowing out into the home.  A professional inspection can confirm if the dust or debris is excessive.
  • When you see there is evidence rodents or insects in the air ducts. Droppings from the rodents or insects can spread disease and be very dangerous.  If you see this, you should contact a NADCA certified professional to have your air ducts system cleaned as soon as possible.
