SANITIZING
System sanitizing is performed ONLY upon the completion of cleaning and ONLY when
there is visible or labratory evidence of microbial growth present in sheet metal duct work.
There are currently NO sanitizers registered by the EPA for use as surface
cleaners or as foggers inside of fiberglass ductboard or fiberglass lined sheet metal.
Products used as foggers to kill or control microbial growth inside air conveyance systems
should ONLY be applied to sheet metal ductwork. It is important to determine if any
sections of your air conveyance system contain fiberglass materials before the application
of any sanitizer.
When a system is sanitized, the air handling unit should not be running. The use of an ultra low
volume (ULV) foggers will sufficiently distribute sanitizer into the system. A location should
be chosen that will allow the sanitizer to reach affected areas. Sanitizer should never be
applied without the use of respritory protection for applicators. Building occupants should
never be in the building during or imediately after sanitizing. Time frames for vacating the
building will vary depending on the size of the system, amount and duration of sanitizing
along with other building and system related factors.
